Tragedy struck on November 21, 1956, when Myest collided with the Statny off the coast of Estonia. Eight men were thrown from the conning tower into the sea; six survived. Inside, nearly two dozen sailors remained trapped. These submarines were the workhorses of Germany's U-boat fleet, widely used in the Battle of the Atlantic.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eU-995 survived the war and was eventually transferred to the Royal Norwegian Navy, where it served as Kaura until 1965. In 1971, it was returned to Germany and turned into a museum ship at Laboe Naval Memorial near Kiel. Named after Greek War of Independence naval hero Dimitrios Papanikolis, the submarine played a significant role during World War II, especially in the Mediterranean theater.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003ePapanikolis carried out several notable patrols and special operations during the Greco-Italian War (1940-1941) and later under Allied command after fleeing to the Middle East following the Axis occupation of Greece in 1941.\u003cbr\u003eIt successfully attacked Axis shipping vessels and supported covert operations by deploying commandos and supplies along occupied Greek coastlines. \u003cbr\u003eThe submarine was decommissioned in 1945 and scrapped.
