This ship actually barely shows up in the background of The Mandalorian, and is more clearly featured in the episode of Star Wars: Rebels titled \"The Protector of Concord Dawn\". Unlike the Gauntlet, it does not rotate its wings upright into a landing position, but its main distinct characteristic is the ability to rotate the wings along the main axis of the ship while flying to make it harder to hit, a feature that was not included in the first and only version of the ship officially released in a LEGO set.\u003c\/font\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color:#222222;\"\u003e\u003cfont size=\"2\"\u003eThis is therefore my modification of the ship included in set 75348, that adds this feature. The wings can rotate ly and the engines were modified to allow for a spot to hold the model while rotating. The build is still sturdy, but the weight of the wings can cause them to sag a little bit (about half a plate at the front). It was also the inspiration for set 75185 Tracker I, from LEGO Star Wars: The maker Adventures.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIt is one of the most unique Tie variants, as it features a conical cockpit and a triple symmetry that are both quite challenging to reproduce in LEGO form. My interpretation is certainly not the first, but I believe this version has a couple of things in its favor. First, the panels or \"fins\" are perfectly symmetrical and do not exibit the underside of plates on one side. They are somewhat fragile (you don't want to hold it from the tip of the fins), but still quite sturdy for a MOC. Second, the model is not large, and can fit quite well with the scale of most \"play scale\" ships, while still featuring seats for a couple of figures, as unlike most Tie variants this fighter has a seat for a crew member or gunner.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe build relies on some specialized pieces from the Millenium Falcon cockpit, but otherwise consists of common pieces in mostly light bluish gray and black. The cockpit can be a bit finnicky to open, but I added a couple of hinged plates on its sides that can be opened in order to give a spot where you can put your fingers to pull the windscreen piece. This project evolved a lot over the years, going through many iterations until finally reaching a point where I was happy both with the looks and the functionality of the s-foils mechanism. After some experimentation with pieces that were released by LEGO after the first version of the MOC, however, it was time to update the MOC.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe model takes some superficial inspiration from Jerac's\/BrickVault's version for the nose and front half of the hull, but very simplified and with a completely redesigned structure to make it sturdier and easier to assemble, while not relying on illegal techniques and very rare parts. The wings and rear half of the hull are mostly inspired on 75301, but improving some key points:\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1. I redesigned the s-foils mechanism, using the basic principle from 75301. It works in the same way, by pressing a part to open the wings, but it's greatly reduced in size and hidden under \"greebling\";\u003cbr\u003e2. The redesign of the mechanism also reduces the gap between the wings while closed to about half a plate (and they don't wobble as much as 75301's);\u003cbr\u003e3. The redesign also gets rid of the Technic axles that went under the astromech slot and forced R2-D2 to stick way out of its place. Now the little droid can sit down properly.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eOther features of the MOC include more detailed controls and seat for the pilot, as well as retractable landing gear! The model is very swooshable and sturdy (although the tips of the lasers can pop off easily).\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSome features were updated with the 2024 version: The whole front of the hull is now 1 plate thinner, with the inner structure redesigned to connect to the gray tip in a different way, and make the slope sections underneath better attached. The section behind the Astromech slot is slightly changed to make the dark gray greebling more accurate. A new piece adds better support to the engines. The guns on the wingtips now use candle pieces to look more accurate.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eFinally, the updated instructions also include a brick built stand for the model, a feature that was much requested.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe MOC uses several parts found in set 75301, so if you can get the set at a discount, it may be worth it to get some of the more specialized parts, as well as the sticker sheet. After the release of the 75302 Imperial Shuttle set, I thought I could take some design ideas from the newest but smaller version in order to improve the model I had and fix those issues. Then I got carried away and practically redesigned the build from scratch.\u003cbr\u003eMy MOC version has a similar size to the 75094 set, but looks significantly more faithful to the ship it represents. It can fit two minifigs in the cockpit and four in the passenger section. It has retractable landing gear and a loading ramp, and honestly looks much better from the underside than the officially released versions. This MOC is based on the Rebels version, which was only released by LEGO in a smaller, almost Microfighter-like scale.\u003cbr\u003eThe MOC, comprised of about 500 pieces, features a swiveling cannon, two hinged doors and a removable top, that grants access to a detailed interior that can fit a driver, a gunner and four passengers. Interior features include a reasonably detailed cockpit, the sleeping quarters and carbonite prisoners from 75292, a zing \"chamber\" and a few spots to attach weapons and the jetpack.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI never managed to design good retractable landing gear, so I settled with detachable ones. These assemblies are simple but are able to hold the weight of the ship, though barely. A couple of the panels can't be opened while the ship is resting on the landing gear. It's a relatively sturdy model, with only the guns as \"weak\" points, and you may want to be careful with the top panel, as the windscreen can break away if you close it too strongly.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eInstructions include a simple stand that lets it be displayed in a more dynamic position on a shelf. The model (with stand included) has 1769 parts and is a little over 1.3 kg (or 46.4oz), which makes it a bit too heavy to hold with one hand, unless you grab it from the bottom. Otherwise it's quite swooshable, particularly if you hold it by both engines.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAlso note this wasn't particularly designed to make use of parts from set 75292. If you own the set and want to see what extra parts you'll need, make use of the Rebrickable feature that allows you to compare between parts lists. It's still \"minifig scale\", or maybe I should say it's \"play scale\", as it scales very well to my X-Wing MOC, which is almost the same size as set 75301.\u003c\/font\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color:#222222;\"\u003e\u003cfont size=\"2\"\u003eFeatures of this MOC include the essential rotating cockpit (which fits a pilot minifig and even has a flight stick) and the folding \"wings\" or s-foils. Most of the MOCs I've seen online of this ship are incredibly large, practically UCS style builds that require a ton of parts and are difficult do display and\/or swoosh around, and I wanted to build something that would not look out of place besides most of the Star Wars LEGO sets currently being sold. The result is a \"play scale\" version of the Fondor at a size that's dictated mostly by the size of the 2x6 and 3x12 Wedge plates that are essential to reproduce some of its shallow, subtle angles.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe model can fit one pilot minifigure in the cockpit, but also has a detailed interior space that can house a few more minifigs.
