Admiral Graf Spee was a German "pocket battleship" (Panzerschiff) that served during the early years of World War II. Launched in 1934, she was the third of the Deutschland-class cruisers, armed with six 11-inch (28 cm) guns, and designed to outgun any ship fast enough to catch her. Admiral Graf Spee became famous for her commerce raiding operations in the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans, sinking nine Allied merchant ships before being engaged by British cruisers at the Battle of the River Plate in December 1939. Damaged in the battle, she sought refuge in Montevideo, Uruguay, but was later scuttled by her captain to avoid capture.
