Finnish Submarine Vesikko

SubMayRine month is back this year and I'm starting this month long submarine frenzy with a request made by one of my fans. This is a micro-scaled model of a Finnish submarine going by the name of Vesikko.

I designed this model at a ~1:500 scale.



The Finnish submarine Vesikko was a coastal submarine built in the early 1930s and served with the Finnish Navy during World War II. Constructed by the Crichton-Vulcan shipyard in Turku and launched in 1933, Vesikko was based on German Type II U-boat designs, developed secretly as Germany was restricted from submarine production under the Treaty of Versailles.

During the war, Vesikko conducted patrols and combat missions in the Baltic Sea, particularly during the Continuation War (1941–1944) against the Soviet Union. After the war, the 1947 Paris Peace Treaty forbade Finland from operating submarines, leading to Vesikko's decommissioning. Today, she is preserved as a museum ship on Suomenlinna Island near Helsinki, serving as a rare example of pre-WWII submarine engineering and Finland’s naval history.
