⬛⬜⬛⬜ THE MOC ⬜⬛⬜⬛
If there's a King, there's got to be a Prince. And so the HMS King George V is not alone on the naval battlefield with the arrival of the LEGO HMS Prince of Wales Battleship MOC. This Battleship follows the footprints of the king being in the same class the other ship I already posted here.
⬛⬜⬛⬜ HISTORY ⬜⬛⬜⬛
HMS Prince of Wales, a King George V-class battleship, was a significant asset in the Royal Navy despite its short-lived service. Constructed at the Cammell Laird shipyard in Birkenhead, the battleship saw action early in its career, being attacked and damaged by German aircraft in August 1940 while still undergoing outfitting. Throughout its brief but eventful history, Prince of Wales played a crucial role in key actions of the Second World War.
Notably, in the Battle of the Denmark Strait in May 1941, Prince of Wales inflicted three hits on the German battleship Bismarck, compelling Bismarck to abandon its raiding mission. The battleship later participated in escorting Malta convoys in the Mediterranean, enduring attacks by Italian aircraft. Tragically, in its final action as part of Force Z, Prince of Wales attempted to intercept Japanese troop convoys off the coast of Malaya and was sunk by Japanese aircraft on December 10, 1941, just two days after the attack on Pearl Harbor.
In a historic and symbolic turn of events, Prince of Wales, alongside the battlecruiser HMS Repulse, became the first capital ships to be solely sunk by air power on the open sea. This event foreshadowed the diminishing role of such ships in naval warfare. Today, the wreck of Prince of Wales lies inverted in 223 feet (68 m) of water near Kuantan in the South China Sea. Unfortunately, in the 21st century, the historical remains of this valiant battleship fell victim to illegal salvage by scrap metal dealers, underscoring the challenges of preserving maritime heritage.
