Ilmarinen Coastal Defence Ship

The Ilmarinen was built with the Vainomoinen ship on my YouTube Channel (click on the banner above to watch it) and are both unusual ships with their box hanging above the main deck of the ship. My LEGO Ilmarinen MOC was built several years ago and I didn't build it at any scale at that time.



Ilmarinen, a Finnish Navy Panssarilaiva (Swedish Pansarskepp, meaning "Armored ship" in English), represented a formidable coastal defence ship under British classification. This naval unit was crafted at the Crichton-Vulcan shipyard in Turku, Finland, and drew its name from the mythological hero Ilmarinen, a prominent figure in the Finnish national epic, the Kalevala. Serving as the flagship of the Navy from May 1, 1933, Ilmarinen played a crucial role in safeguarding Finland's coastal waters.

Tragically, the illustrious career of Ilmarinen came to an end on September 13, 1941, when the ship succumbed to sinking. Despite its eventual fate, Ilmarinen remains a significant part of Finnish naval history, symbolizing both the nation's maritime strength and the enduring spirit of the mythological hero after whom it was named.
