Update: I can now confirm that this build is fully viable.
Got a bit of an idea when looking at how Crab Droids deflect blaster fire by using their front legs, and thought it would be a good opportunity to make a Separatist counterpart to the Republic AT gun I recently made.
I don't believe in charging people for the instructions, as I believe LEGO should be enjoyed by everyone! However, if you'd still like to show your support, you can leave a small tip via my Ko-fi page: here
Lore:
LM-439 Ghost Crab Droid
Manufacturer: Techno Union
Model: LM-439 Ghost Crab Droid
Class: Armoured Anti-Tank Artillery Droid
Primary Armament: Medium Mass Driver Cannon
Secondary Features: Reinforced forward-facing legs for defence and stabilisation
Role: Anti-vehicle unit
Design & Purpose
The LM-439 Ghost Crab Droid was a specialised anti-armour droid developed by the Techno Union to counter Republic armoured divisions. Unlike the LM-432 Crab Droid, which was built for close-quarters combat, the Ghost Crab Droid was designed to destroy heavy vehicles, such as AT-TEs, Juggernauts, and TX-130 tanks from medium to long range.
The droid features six legs, each serving a distinct function:
- Two forward-facing legs – These are heavily armoured and act as shields when the droid enters its firing configuration. They are positioned to absorb direct hits from enemy tank cannons, missiles, and blaster turrets.
- Four supporting legs – These provide mobility and stability, ensuring the droid remains anchored while firing its medium mass driver cannon.
Because of its reliance on front-facing armour, the Ghost Crab Droid is most effective when engaging enemies from a prepared position, such as behind cover or within a choke point.
Combat Strategy & Deployment
The LM-439 was deployed in two primary roles:
- Ambush Unit – In open battlefields, it was positioned in rocky terrain, ruins, or dense forests, where it could surprise enemy armour with devastating armour-piercing shots before retreating.
- Urban Blockade Unit – In city warfare, Ghost Crab Droids were used as mobile barricades, blocking roads and intersections with their reinforced forward legs while targeting Republic vehicles attempting to push through.
When engaged in combat, the droid lowers its forward legs, effectively forming a shield wall while its mass driver cannon takes aim. This configuration allows it to withstand direct tank fire but also limits its mobility, making it vulnerable to flanking attacks.
To compensate for this weakness, Ghost Crab Droids relied on battle droid support squads, such as B1s, B2 Super Battle Droids, and Droidekas, to protect their exposed sides and rear.
Weaknesses
- Vulnerable Chassis – While its legs are heavily reinforced, the central body remains highly susceptible to blaster fire, explosives, and Jedi attacks.
- Limited Mobility in Firing Mode – Once in position, the droid becomes largely stationary, requiring supporting units to defend it.
- EMP and Ion Vulnerability – As with most Separatist droids, it is highly susceptible to ion disruptors and EMP strikes.
Notable Battles
Ghost Crab Droids were deployed in various battles, including:
- The Siege of Anaxes – Used in open-field combat, they were deployed to disrupt Republic troop movements while their mass driver cannons targeted incoming AT-TE walkers.
- The Battle of Mygeeto – Positioned at choke points, they formed armoured barricades that stalled the Republic’s advance, forcing them to rely on Jedi-led assaults to clear the way.
- The Defence of Cato Neimoidia – Ghost Crab Droids were used to hold bridges and key roadways, preventing Republic armour from overwhelming Separatist forces.
Though highly effective in defensive warfare, their lack of speed and exposed chassis ultimately made them vulnerable to Republic counterattacks. After the fall of the Separatist Alliance, most units were destroyed in battle or repurposed by mercenary and criminal groups seeking durable defensive units.
