⬛⬜⬛⬜ THE MOC ⬜⬛⬜⬛
For starters, this is a simplified design of the Lockheed C-5 Galaxy in an unscaled LEGO build. It doesn't have the correct proportions I believe as I built it for my 2017 collection without caring about realism. But I did my best back then to making it look like a C-5 Galaxy.
The Rebrickable version replaces several pieces to reduce the amount and strengthen the overall structure of the plane. But you can still use the building instructions video on YouTube.
⬛⬜⬛⬜ HISTORY ⬜⬛⬜⬛
The Lockheed C-5 Galaxy, a large military transport aircraft, is crucial for the United States Air Force (USAF) due to its heavy intercontinental-range strategic airlift capability. Built by Lockheed and currently maintained by Lockheed Martin, it can carry oversized and outsized loads, including all air-certifiable cargo. Similar to the C-141 Starlifter and C-17 Globemaster III, it ranks among the world's largest military aircraft.
Despite a complex development with cost overruns leading to financial strains for Lockheed, the C-5 entered service in 1969. However, early issues, including wing cracks, limited its capabilities until rectified. The C-5M Super Galaxy, an upgraded version with new engines and modernized avionics, aims to extend its service life beyond 2040.
Throughout its history, the C-5 has played a vital role in major conflicts such as Vietnam, Iraq, Yugoslavia, and Afghanistan, while also providing support to allies like Israel during the Yom Kippur War and participating in humanitarian and disaster relief efforts. Additionally, it has contributed to the US space program.
