Description
Description
I was inspired by one of Mustard's YouTube video about the Nautilus submarine which made a daring expedition to the North Pole in the early 20th century. Since it's also SubMayRine Month on The Bobby Brix Channel, it's the perfect opportunity to give a go on recreating this small piece of history at a 1:500 scale.
Read more about this submarine's adventure below!
USS O-12 (SS-73) was an O-class submarine of the United States Navy, launched in 1917 and entering service in 1918 in the Panama Canal Zone. These later O-boats, O-11 through O-16, were designed by Lake Torpedo Boat and are sometimes considered a separate class due to their performance differences from the Electric Boat designs.
After being decommissioned by the US Navy in 1924, the submarine was leased for Arctic exploration in 1930 under the sponsorship of William Randolph Hearst and renamed Nautilus. However, the expedition encountered significant challenges, resulting in damage to the submarine during Arctic exploration in 1931. Despite gathering valuable data, Hearst deemed the venture a failure. The submarine was returned to the US Navy after repairs in Norway and was scuttled in a fjord in November 1931.
