MOC-164543-1
The S.S Italis is the final ship in my latest S.S. America Line-up as it coincides with the last real job the ship ever had before her unusual fate in the Canary Islands.
As with the previous versions of the original S.S. America, the S.S. Italis is built at a 1:1400 scale.
⬛⬜⬛⬜ HISTORY ⬜⬛⬜⬛
The real shenanigans started after the S.S. Australis was given a second chance:
The S.S. Australis, having undergone a remarkable transformation into the S.S. Italis under Chandris Lines, marked a new phase in its maritime journey. Repurchased by Chandris for $1,000,000, the vessel underwent a series of changes, shedding its former identity as the S.S. America. Notably, the forward dummy funnel, worn down by years of neglect, was removed as part of an ambitious plan to modernize its silhouette. The vision included adding streamlined superstructure above the bridge, intending to give the ship a contemporary look. However, this envisioned 'new look' was never fully realized. Despite the incomplete modernization, Italis retained the dark blue hull adopted during its tenure with Venture Cruise Lines.
Under Chandris, the S.S. Italis commenced its second career as a hotel ship, a role it undertook from June 23 to July 20, 1979, during the Organisation of African Unity Conference in Monrovia, Liberia. Following this stint, Italis embarked on a series of three 14-night cruises from Genoa and Barcelona to Egypt, Israel, and the Eastern Mediterranean, starting on July 28, 1979. The ship's itinerary showcased its versatility in navigating diverse regions. However, after concluding this series of cruises, the S.S. Italis was finally laid up in Elefsina Bay, Piraeus, Greece, on September 12, 1979. This marked a temporary hiatus in its seafaring adventures, emphasizing the evolving roles and challenges faced by the vessel in its second Chandris career.
