⬛⬜⬛⬜ THE MOC ⬜⬛⬜⬛
Since I built the RMS Empress of Ireland, I've had requests from my fans to design the other ship responsible for its sinking: the SS Storstad. Despite being much smaller than her counterpart, she managed to survive the tragic collision.
I designed this MOC at an approximate scale of 1:1400.
⬛⬜⬛⬜ HISTORY ⬜⬛⬜⬛
The SS Storstad was a Norwegian collier built in 1910, designed to transport coal and other bulk cargo. Owned by A. F. Klaveness & Co., the ship was notable for its robust construction and service in maritime trade. However, it is most remembered for its role in one of the deadliest maritime disasters in Canadian history.
On May 29, 1914, the Storstad collided with the RMS Empress of Ireland in the foggy waters of the Saint Lawrence River near Rimouski, Quebec. The collision caused the Empress of Ireland to sink rapidly, resulting in the loss of 1,012 lives. The Storstad survived the incident, though it sustained significant damage to its bow. The tragedy brought global attention to maritime safety and navigation practices in poor visibility conditions.
