Continuing my Star Trek Lego collection, I give you the Danube Class runabout!
Before the Defiant, there was this. Bigger than a shuttlepod, smaller than a full-size ship. Seen in Star Trek: The Next Generation, it's useful, but when your series is tied to the Terok Nor space station, you need something this size to really get out and about. So this was the ship class of choice.
The series showcased a fair few of these, all named after rivers - the Rio Grande was the most used on screen and, famously, was the first ship to discover the Bajoran wormhole to the Gamma quadrant. Perfectly sized for short away missions and dialogue-heavy character scenes, it was always a well-used vessel to propel the stories forward.
Initially, I was going to make this a small-scale simple design, but on researching the ship, I found it was designed to be modular. This intrigued me, wondering if I could turn this into a full play set. Turns out I could! By making it larger scale, for the first time ever I could include a full interior: bridge, meeting room, storage and living modules and a detachable command module upfront. The bridge includes all main seating and the transporter.
Simply put, this is the best runabout for detail and play features at this scale, and I can't wait to see pictures from people sending their own crews off on away missions :) Speaking of crew, I've included a few favourites from the Defiant set that have frequently featured in runabout missions.
Oh, and I've included a detachable rollbar if you prefer the look of the Ganges runabout!
