Description

NATO dubbed this submarine the Typhoon Class although for the Russian Navy it is considered as Project 941 "Akula" with Akula meaning "Shark". Which is the correct term exactly? Read more about it below.
The Typhoon class, known as Project 941 Akula in the Soviet Union, was a series of nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines built for the Soviet Navy. These submarines were the largest ever constructed, with a submerged displacement of 48,000 tonnes, and could house a crew of 160 for several months.
The NATO reporting name "Typhoon" is believed to originate from a speech by General Secretary Leonid Brezhnev in 1974, referencing a new type of submarine in response to the US Navy's Ohio-class. In March 2012, the Russian Navy terminated the Typhoon modernization program due to cost, opting for new Borei-class submarines instead. By September 2012, only one Typhoon submarine, Dmitriy Donskoi, remained in service, refitted with modern RSM-56 Bulava SLBMs for testing. It was decommissioned in February 2023.
