Description
This is a 122-piece recreation of the World War 2 USS Lexington Aircraft Carrier after it's modernization that occurred in the 1950s.
USS Lexington (CV/CVA/CVS/CVT/AVT-16), an Essex-class aircraft carrier, was originally named Cabot but renamed to honor the lost USS Lexington (CV-2). Commissioned in February 1943, she played a crucial role in the Pacific War, serving as Admiral Marc Mitscher's flagship and leading the Fast Carrier Task Force. Decorated with 11 battle stars and a Presidential Unit Citation, she saw extensive action.
After the war, Lexington was decommissioned but modernized and reactivated in the 1950s as an attack carrier (CVA) and later as an antisubmarine carrier (CVS). In her second career, she served in the Atlantic/Mediterranean and the Pacific, spending much of her time as a training carrier (CVT) in Pensacola, Florida, for nearly 30 years.
With an active service life longer than any other Essex-class ship, Lexington was decommissioned in 1991 and became a museum ship in Corpus Christi, Texas. Designated a National Historic Landmark in 2003, she holds the distinction of being the oldest remaining fleet carrier in the world, despite her surviving sister ships Yorktown, Intrepid, and Hornet carrying lower hull numbers.
