USS Monitor Ironclad

Very simple for our times indeed, but back then, this was something that could make anyone's jaw drop. When I build the LEGO USS Monitor Ironclad MOC in 2017 I was thinking about simplicity rather than scale.



USS Monitor, commissioned in early 1862, was the first ironclad warship built for the United States Navy during the American Civil War. It played a pivotal role in the Battle of Hampton Roads on March 9, under the command of Lieutenant John L. Worden. During this battle, Monitor engaged in a stalemate with the casemate ironclad CSS Virginia (constructed on the hull of the scuttled steam frigate USS Merrimack).

The distinctive feature of Monitor's design was its revolving turret, created by American inventor Theodore Timby. This innovative design was swiftly replicated, establishing the monitor class and influencing the construction of armored warships for the American Navy in the subsequent decades.
